A Real Man

There are so many opinions on what the ideal man is.
Some would define a real man as one who goes to the gym every day to work at his chiseled body and to pump up those biceps breaking out underneath his short sleeves. A real man has a high paying job, owns his own house (with the new Harley Davidson parked in the driveway), is the life of the party – and yet is so sensitive he’d take the time to hold a private funeral service for a butterfly who ended up on the wrong side of death in his organic herb garden.
For many of us, we’d be lucky if we had a bicycle parked in the driveway of the house we are renting, let alone a Harley! It’s clear that only a few will ever achieve the status of ‘real man’ according to how the magazines define it. So how then does the bible define a real man?
According to the Israelites, King David represented the pinnacle of what it meant to be a real man. He was a powerful king, and had all the popularity and riches he could ever dream of. So as David neared death, his son hung off every word of advice he gave, as it would determine how Solomon would lead once he became king:
“I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him… Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go” – 1 Kings 2:2-3 (NIV)
After 40 years of experience David summed up his wisest advice by saying, “Act like a man, and… walk in obedience to [God]”. Although very simple, in the following years Solomon would discover just how true these words of advice were.
Because of grace received by faith, we are all son’s and daughters of the King. However it remains to be seen as to whether we either choose to conform and live according to what the world defines as success, or use our freedom to live in obedience to the truth according to God’s Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit?
A ‘real’ man (or woman) is not someone who ticks all the boxes a magazine editor is looking for, – but someone who consistently chooses to walk in obedience to God , no matter the personal cost or sacrifice.
Get real, and get walking in the way’s of God!
