The day I got my driver’s licence was one of the best days of my life!
It was the best birthday present a 17 year old could hope for – as before this day I had to walk everywhere – and if I wanted to go for a surf before school, it was an icy morning ride in the dark if we were to avoid getting into trouble for being late again!
Before getting my driver’s licence I could only go as fast and as far as my legs could take me. But from that day on, I could driver way further and faster than I could ever go on my own!
Just as a car gives us power to go further and faster than ever, so too the Holy Spirit enables us to achieve the impossible – enabling us to overcome sin and temptation – and to accomplish the dreams God has placed in our hearts.
However the the way we receive the Holy Spirit is very different to the way we receive our drivers licence.
A person will only qualify to drive if they pass a test. If they fail, their legs will have to keep working harder for longer! However when it comes to receiving the Holy Spirit, the only qualification needed is faith.
Paul writes to the church in Galatia to affirm this truth:
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ” – Galatians 3:2
These Christian’s didn’t receive the Holy Spirit based on their ability to maintain a perfect moral performance, but by faith in Christ.
The mistake that many can make is that the Holy Spirit (and the gifts of the Holy Spirit) is reserved for those ‘holy people’. However the truth is that God promised the Holy Spirit would be a gift available to all:
“I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit” – Acts 2:17-18
Whether you’re facing a long or difficult walk ahead of you, or need the power to achieve the dreams God has placed in your heart, you have same the opportunity as anyone to receive your licence for speed – not based on your past performance, but your faith in Him!
