Courage in the Face of Fear (Part 4 of 4): ‘Helium Fears’

Anything said by someone who has just sucked on a balloon full of helium sounds funny, no matter how lacking in actual humour they are!

Because Helium is lighter and less dense than regular air, it changes the resonance of the vocal tract, altering the sound of the voice. No one could ever take a person with lungs full of helium seriously!
Fear is something that acts in a similar way to helium. Fear is all based on a lie. It carries no weight, but effects everything we do, including even the way we speak. Just as a person with helium rushing through their vocal cords lacks any authority, so too a person with fear pulsating in their heart also lacks the authority they need to take hold of all that God has for them.
Jesus’ followers were surrounded by threats and intimidation from people who wanted to silence and destroy them, so they gathered together to seek help from God to overcome the battle they faced:
“Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.” After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly’ – Acts 4:29,31 (NIV)
As they prayed, God filled them with the Holy Spirit – giving them the courage and authority they needed to face the wave of persecution they were about to endure.
In this case, the Holy Spirit acted in the same way that oxygen works in a persons vocal cords after sucking in helium. As the denser air is breathed in, the voice is restored and authority comes back to the words that are spoken.
As the disciples were filled with the weightiness of the Spirit of Truth, the empty threat of fear had no longer had any room to exist. Despite the looming threats, they went on to speak with greater boldness than ever!
Even though at times fear or intimidation may seem overwhelming, the truth is that these lies are nothing more than a toothless bark from an enemy who has no substance or authority at all. Instead of breathing in empty lies, breathe in the Holy Spirit, who will give you the courage to face of even the greatest of fear!
