Your One Thing

Although it was the very thing I studied for, nothing sent me to the place of boredom quicker than when I did the working drawings for a new building to be constructed.

In order to do these drawings accurately, I had to have an intimate understanding of all the Building, Residential and Energy Efficiency Codes, let alone basic construction knowledge. It was a meticulous exercise that drained my energy so quickly it’s effect was stronger than the most potent sleeping pill!
In contrast however, the last company I worked for had someone who not only specialised in working drawings, but took great pleasure in combing through the finer detail. This was the ideal situation, as I was now released to focus on the design side of things – and as a result came alive and performed at a much higher level.
The early church had gathered unprecedented momentum, and as a result it was all hands on deck with everyone putting their hands to whatever needed to be done. But as time went on, the key leaders recognised a need to focus on the one thing they were called to do:
‘So the Twelve… said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. [So let’s] choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word” – Acts 6:2-4 (NIV)
The twelve found seven others who were gifted in the area of hospitality, and were then able to focus on what made them come alive. As they worked together in this way, it proved to be a powerful witness – and God moved powerfully as they each focussed their energies on the one thing ahead of them:
‘So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly’ (6:7)
As is the case with any job, there are times in life that we will need to do things that we don’t want to! But as we grow in capacity and opportunity, it’s important to remember the benefit of focussing your energies into the one thing that makes you come alive and playing to your strengths in a way that set’s up you and those around you for a win!
