Out of Control

There are some land mines in life that we just can’t avoid.

Whether it’s the consequence of someone else’s bad decisions or a series of random events that have converged all at once, we can find ourselves in a place that we never imagined.
Joseph lost all control over his life when he was sold into slavery and locked away in a prison cell; a far cry from where he imagined he would end up:
‘Because [his brothers] were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt’ – Acts 7:9-10 (NIV)
As the prison door slammed shut, he began to face the fact that his life was over. He had no hope for a future as every part of his daily life was controlled by his jailers. However even though he found himself in a distant land away from everything he once knew and was powerless to change any aspect of his painful situation, Joseph was not alone:
‘But God was with him and rescued him from all his troubles’ (7:9)
Joseph began to realise that God had a bigger plan at work – and that rather than helicoptering him out of prison, God gave him the wisdom in how to endure through the season:
‘He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace’ (7:10)
As Joseph relied on God, he received the wisdom he needed to navigate himself through this traumatic season of his life. Not only did he survive, but he started to thrive in the midst of an environment that should have claimed him as another victim.
It was this very act of endurance that won the attention of Pharaoh and set him up to step into the destiny God had for him all along!
If you are in a season where you find yourself stepping on all kinds of land mines and feeling that things are increasingly beyond your control, then instead of asking God to rescue you out of your troubles, it may be the right thing to ask Him for the wisdom in how to endure through it:
‘If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you’ – James 1:5 (NLT)
As God gives you the wisdom you need, you will discover that your set backs were actually a set up for you to step into the destiny He had planned for you all along!
