Get Your Heart off the Couch

Even if I was the most romantic poet and could write the most eloquent words of love for Jess, it would mean absolutely nothing if I didn’t actually get off the couch and put my words into action.
I could even put my words to music and sing her a love song full of emotion and devotion – but if the garbage bags remain piled up in the kitchen and the dishes are left stacked up in the sink, pretty soon she’s going to rip the guitar out of my hands and shove it in the rubbish bin too!
For all the romantic movies and magazines available out there these days, it seems that what the world needs most is not another love song, but people of substance who will follow up their confession with action.
In no way am I saying that I’m the best example (I’ve left my fair share of stinky nappies on the floor!), but I am saying that if my love is for real, then I will put the potatoes chips down and get off the couch to put my love into action! Real love will always result in action – and this is no different for those who have a ‘heart after God’.
King Saul was exposed as a couch potato so he was replaced by David, a man who was willing to get off the couch and follow God even to the most dangerous places:
‘After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do’ – Acts 13:22 (NIV)
Although Saul professed his devotion for God, his actions betrayed him. Saul prioritised his own comfort and consequentially robbed himself of all the good things God had for him.
Today Jesus is searching not only for those who will sing Him love songs, but for those of substance whose love is proven for real as they follow up their confession with action:
“Those who obey [me] are the ones who love me” – John 14:21a (NLT)
I’m grateful that Jess is so gracious and that although my words aren’t always perfectly matched with action, she understands I’m a ‘work in progress’! Thank God that He also understands our weakness and that we are also a work in progress as we continue to move the confession of our hearts off the couch and into action!
