Free of Charge

I've recently discovered the side of the menu that is always overlooked. You may think it's because I have kids, but this is nothing to do with how many mouths I've got to feed!

The kids menu section is the perfect way to enjoy breakfast in a week where the budget protests against me even thinking about it. Order a kids breakfast with a side of hollandaise and you can have eggs benedict at half the price!

But good as a cheap meal is, nothing beats eating for free!

The other day I had breakfast with a friend followed by another meeting straight after, and when I went to pay the guy at the counter told me there is no charge because it had already been paid! Suddenly that lingering flavour of bacon and hollandaise tasted even better thanks to my friends generosity!

There is a charge of guilt we all have because of sin. Despite our most honourable efforts we all fall short of Gods standard of perfect love and continue to rack up the bill. But the good news is (understatement of the century!) that when the day of judgment arrives we can each have our debts completely wiped:

'Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies' – Romans 8:33 (NIV)

If God is both the owner of the restaurant and the One who pays our bill, then who else can possibly bring a charge against us?

'Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died [and] was raised to life is at the right hand of God interceding for us' (8:34)

We are often our own worst accusers and although God has already paid we still run after him trying to shove money in His hands. But the debt has been paid and there is nothing left to do apart from to thank Him with a grateful heart!

God is not a reluctant forgiver but a generous Father who has not only paid our debt, but longs to pour out His favour over His children:

'He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?' (8:32)

It never means we take advantage of His generosity. But it does mean that no matter how far you fall or how much you owe, He will never let anything get in the way of His pursuit of you!
