Calculated Wisdom

They decided it was no good and that they would take it straight back to the shop. The calculator Mum and Greg had just bought was broken, as no matter what button they pressed, the numbers on the screen were permanently frozen.

Right in the midst of their frustration their grandson Jamie walked up to see if he could be of some assistance. He picked up the calculator, glanced at his grandparents and gave a smirk as he peeled off the film that covered the screen. It was impossible to delete the numbers from the screen because they were on the film and not the display!

As Jamie rode into the sunset Mum and Greg were left sitting at the table astounded and realised that no matter how many years may pass that we never stop learning!

As a general rule, the older a person gets, the more that person grows in wisdom and understanding. We look up to and respect those who have traveled this road before and seek to learn from the successes and failures of those ahead of us. But although this may be a general rule, the truth is that the ultimate source of wisdom is not how many candles a person may blow out this year, but the spirit of God residing on the inside:

"Age should speak; advanced years should teach wisdom. But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding" – Job 32:7-8 (NIV)

It's not your degree, your upbringing, your age, your experience, popularity, position or prominence that is the ultimate source of wisdom. Although these things play their part, it is the Spirit of God that gives us the wisdom we need to navigate life and the things of God.

The good news is that wisdom is available to every one of us! God is so ready to give wisdom to anyone who asks Him for it:

'If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you' – James 1:5 (NIV)

As you seek God for wisdom, it's always remain open to the way God may bring the answer. Whether it's through a grandchild or the bible, a podcast, preacher, parent, friend or foe, always remain humble enough to listen for the Spirits whisper of wisdom!
