I remember innocently turning down a particular road only to be confronted by a huge red sign screaming, 'Wrong Way, Go Back'!
I immediately realised I'd turned down the wrong road and as the traffic driving towards me wondered how I got my drivers license in the first place, I pulled down hard on the steering wheel to turn around and head in the right direction. As I resumed my journey I breathed a sigh of relief and thanked God for the perfectly positioned sign that put me back on track.
There are also times in life that we turn down a road not realising it's a path leading to disaster. These paths can often look good and even exciting at the time but as we travel further and go deeper we begin to realise the gravity of our error. Although the consequences may not be obvious to begin with, the further you travel the more distance is put between where you intended to end up and where you're actually located.
But the good news is that God will often place big red 'Wrong Way, Go Back' signs to prevent us from a head on collision with all kinds of destructive decisions. The challenge however is that these signs will often come in ways that may require a healthy dose of humility on our part.
It's easy to admit you've turned down the wrong road when an angry Mac Truck is bearing down on you, but when a friend, parent or partner suggests you may need to reconsider your direction it's an entirely different story. But if your humble enough to remain open to correction, you won't only avoid the pitfalls but will discover the path of life:
'People who accept discipline are on the pathway to life, but those who ignore correction will go astray' – Proverbs 10:17 (NLT)
These days it seems unforgivable if anyone disagrees with you, and if anyone dares to suggest you may be wrong is arrogant and out of touch. But if I was to ignore the 'arrogant' and 'out of touch' sign that day, I would not only have missed my destination but would have also been permanently touched up by 130 tonnes of truck!
Always be open to the life signs God may be placing before you. You will not only be saved from disaster, but will continue on the path of life and adventure!
