Total Eclipse

It was the most talked about shadow in history.

On the 21st of August the moon cast a 100km wide shadow over the US to create the ‘Path of Totality’ and the first coast to coast total eclipse since 1918. Millions of people across the nation gathered outside to enjoy the phenomena, with even the President pausing to soak up a few moon rays.

Although everyone knew the darkness caused by the eclipse would only last for two or three minutes in any one spot, there are times when the shadows of darkness in life can go on much longer than expected. Astronomers were able to predict where and when the moon would eclipse the sun, but no one can predict when times of darkness will eclipse hope for the future or the joy of life.

But although we can’t predict times of darkness, we can be sure that the light will come again as we hold onto the promise of God:

‘Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him’ – Proverbs 30:5 (ESV)

Although there may be moments or seasons when the sun seems to disappear, it is no less present than it was before. It is only hidden from sight for a moment and will surely appear once again. Although it might feel like God has abandoned you or that His promises are not coming through, on the other side of this moment of darkness there will come a time they will prove true.

There are certain seasons that we are required to dig deeper. God calls us to greater maturity and trust in Him as we press through fear and the temptation to run. It’s at these times our faith is strengthened and our character is reinforced by anchoring ourselves onto not what is seen, but the unseen reality of His promise:

‘Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth’ – Hosea 6:3 (NIV)

Never allow a moment of darkness to convince you the light doesn’t exist. Whether it’s for a few minutes, months or even years, understand that this eclipse is not a path of totality but a path that will lead you into deeper intimacy as you experience the faithfulness of God!
