Glow in the Dark

I was so excited!

I couldn’t wait to go to bed and turn out the lights so I could tell the time on my new glow in the dark watch. I thought my favourite birthday present looked pretty cool during the day, but once the lights were out and my covers were drawn I could hardly take my eyes off it!

It was the same for the galaxy plastered over my bedroom ceiling. Although the yellowy green stars looked pretty ordinary during the day time, my imagination ran wild once the light was flicked off.

Some things shine brightest in the darkness. In fact the darker it gets the more it stands out as the contrast of the light against the black backdrop becomes increasingly vivid.

At a time others may have seen a sunset, David saw a sunrise because he understood that darkness only caused his light to burn even brighter:

‘Even in darkness light dawns for the upright’ – Psalm 112:4 (NIV)

Instead of living in fear and shrinking back, David grew stronger as the world around him grew darker. Because he trusted in the Lord his heart was able to glow in the dark and remain steadfast even in the midst of great uncertainty:

‘Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear’ (112:6-8)

David had great confidence that rather than snuffing it out, the darkness actually became the opportunity for his light to dawn on the world around him. David’s trust in God remained immovable and as a result he led the way for others to find lasting peace and security.

In the same way, regardless of what policy is made by politicians or decisions are made by people in power, we should never live in fear, because light has the chance to shine brightest even in the midst of the greatest darkness.

Rather than believing for the worst, have faith for the best, and that just as Winston Churchill declared of Britain when faced with the Third Reich and its fingers of darkness reaching across the English Chanel, that instead of defeat, this would indeed be our ‘finest hour’!
