Find Your Way

After being tailgated by a crazy driver through the western suburbs of Sydney I finally decided to call the police.

As I was driving along the freeway a car pulled up dangerously close behind me, so I took my foot off the accelerator just long enough to let him know how I felt about it.

After changing lanes to let him pass, he turned in front of me and slammed on the brakes. To avoid an accident and any further conflict I took the nearest freeway exit to get away from him.

But he followed in hot pursuit!

Weaving in and out of traffic, he even jumped over a median strip to keep up with me. I called the police, confessed my sins of slowing down and asked for some assistance.

The operator offered to lead me to the closest police station, but to my frustration the blue dot on Google Maps located me somewhere in central Australia! I had no idea where I was, and it was therefore impossible to find my way.

The two essential components in finding your way is to firstly know where you are, and secondly what direction to head in. These also apply to life, and despite the endless array of competing voices and empty promises it’s the word of God that cuts through the noise to lead the way:

‘Your word is a light for my path’ – Psalm 119:105

Firstly, the word of God is the essential ‘You Are Here’ marker that gives us a heart check and the opportunity to recalibrate and shift direction:

‘The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates [deep] and judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart’ – Hebrews 4:12

Secondly, the word of God gives us direction by reminding us not to follow the crowd, to follow truth:

‘Don’t copy the customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you’ – Romans 12:2

After finally discovering my location I headed towards the police station and the driver gave up and disappeared!

As we continue to hold to the word of God, we will not only discover where we are and what direction to take, but will overcome all attempts to take us off course!
