Power Up

Something was wrong.

No matter how hard I jammed down the toaster it just wouldn’t work! I checked the clock on the microwave and opened the fridge to confirm the power was out. It was either a black out or something wrong with the wiring in the house.

I poked my head outside to see the street lights were still on so I walked around to the meter box and opened the lid. I immediately realised a fuse had blown, so I reached out and flicked the mains switch to bring power back to the house.

It’s a common story. When the power goes out, we can hardly even function in our own homes! Although can still survive, we fall far short of the way we live when 230 Volts of power is delivered to our walls.

This is a picture of how we live when we’re not connected to the power available to us through Jesus. Something has gone wrong, and a fuse has blown. Our sin has caused a disconnection between us and God, and although we can still function, we live a life that is far short of everything God had intended for us.

The good news however, is that God has provided a meter box with a mains switch available to everyone of us. And unlike our ever increasing electricity prices, this power is not something we pay for, but is accessed through simple faith in Jesus.

Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus to remind them of the power available to them:

‘I pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead’ – Ephesians 1:19-21 (NLT)

Apparently some of these Ephesian Christians were living with the mains switched off. They were attempting to live life while disconnected, so Paul reminded them to turn on the switch and access the power available for those who ‘believe in Him’.

The power of God is a spiritual power available to those who simply believe in Him, and far surpasses any voltage or authority in the world today. Instead of living with the lights out or in a constant state of darkness and defeat, God wants to light up every room in our heart and life as we plug into Him!
