It’s a lot of hard work to be someone your not!
Pretending to be someone else keeps you trapped on the inside and robs you from the confidence to be yourself, and this is especially true when it comes to the way we approach God.
When we are weighed down by the guilt and shame of failure or continuously fall short of the self imposed expectations we list for ourselves, we can be tempted to take a wide berth in the way we relate to God.
The anticipation of a frown or some sort of disapproval will always cause us to present ourselves in the way we think people want to see rather than sharing with them who we truly are. This lack of vulnerability and authenticity creates a card board cut out relationship void of any real substance beyond the glossy facade.
But God desires the deepest intimacy with every single one of us, and has therefore made a way for us to live free from fear and with the confidence to be who we truly are:
‘In Christ and our faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence’ – Ephesians 3:12
Freedom is to be free from all fear of rejection. I no longer have to pretend, but can be exactly who I am right now in this season. I want to keep improving and become more like Jesus, but grace understands I’m on a journey and a work in progress so it gives me the space to learn how to walk.
Confidence comes from knowing I’m not only free from the fear of rejection, but am loved and valued for who I really am. There are diamonds on the inside, and I have the confidence to be who I am right now, knowing that grace continues its work to remove the cardboard cut out to increasingly reveal the authentic me.
This isn’t a freedom that can be demanded or a confidence that can be manufactured, but is a gift given on the inside as we hold onto the greatest gift of all:
“We believe that we are all saved the same way, by the undeserved grace of Jesus” – Acts 15:11
Refuse to be a card board cut out, but trust in the grace that not only frees us from fear, but gives us the confidence to approach God and take hold of the destiny He has for every one of us!
