I couldn’t believe it!
Discretely hidden amongst the lush green blades of grass was a brown land mine strategically positioned so the sole of my shoe would bear the full brunt of the explosion.
After a quick succession of frantic swipes against a patch of longer grass I managed to clean most of it off and resumed my day as normal.
But as I was sitting with friends later that evening my senses were suddenly assaulted with a waft that almost knocked the wind out of me. As I looked around to condemn the perpetrator I realised that it wasn’t they, but I who was guilty of contaminating the lounge room. Lodged between a crevasse in my sole I found the tiniest hint of brown that had the potency and power of a split hydrogen atom!
Smell can be a powerful thing.
Before a meal is even put on the table it’s flavour can be tasted as it’s fragrance fills the house. In the same way, each of us caries our own scent as a foretaste to what’s inside our heart.
Paul encourages us to offer a pleasant aroma by loving the same way Jesus did:
‘Follow God’s example… and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God’ – Ephesians 5:1-2 (NIV)
Although Jesus was God’s own Son, He emptied Himself of all rights and privileges, and instead of pursuing His own agenda or giving into fleshly desires, He set them all aside because of love:
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” – John 15:13
In contrast to this selfless love is the potent waft that comes as a result of selfish ‘love’:
‘Among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or greed’ – Ephesians 5:3
The tiniest hint of ‘brown’ lodged within a crevasse of our soul can have a potent and damaging effect on our life and relationships.
Your scent is determined not by what you spray on the outside but how you love on the inside.
Avoid walking where the dogs have been, and choose your scent by committing to a love that is driven by the good of others rather than the pursuit of fleeting selfish pleasure.
