A few years ago I went on a road trip with my father in law for a week of surfing at Red Bluff, a world class surfing spot in the North of Western Australia. The continuous lines of glassy barrels peeled off the point as smoothly as the plastic film is peeled from a new phone screen!
But in order to enjoy the waves firstly I had to pick a path through the sharp jagged rocks that lined the precarious limestone headland. I then had to perfectly time my entry into a key hole hacked into the side of the cliff and quickly paddle into deeper water before the next wave rumbled through.
As I staggered my way across the rocky reef there were moments that my timing would be off and I would brace myself for impact as a furious white wall of water crashed angrily towards me.
Although the thought of continuing forward completely disappeared, there was no way I was going backwards. The only thing I could do was to hold onto a rock and stand firm until the wave passed by me.
There are also times in life when instead of moving forward, we need to stand strong and refuse to give up old ground:
‘Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power’ – Ephesians 6:10
Paul understood that although cleverly disguised, many of the waves that came against him were not the people in front of him, but the power of evil behind them:
‘Take your stand against the devil’s schemes, for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against… the spiritual forces of evil’ (6:11-12)
There was no way he could survive by relying on his own limited strength, but had to stand strong in the power of the Holy Spirit. It was through these times that Paul discovered he could remain standing no matter what he faced:
‘Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand’ (6:13)
It’s not if, but when the waves come against us. And when they do, you can be confident that the Holy Spirit will give you the strength to remain standing even as the greatest waves come against you!
