Hope

Hope is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. But it can equally be one of the most devastating if we lose it.

Hope gives the ability to endure through even the most impossible circumstances. It breathes life into the lifeless and as Shane Lopez states, even has some health benefits:

“During the course of illness, belief and expectation – two mental states associated with hope – have an impact on the nervous system which, in turn, sets off a chain reaction that makes improvement and recovery more likely’.

But hope is not something that can be built on false premise. If the source of it’s strength is based on a feeling or relies on circumstance, then it isn’t real and is just wishful thinking.

But hope built on the foundation of truth will endure any storm attempting to tear it down, and is something that God promises to those who trust in Him:

‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit’ – Romans 15:13 (NIV)

It’s the Holy Spirit that pours hope into our hearts that gives us the strength to endure through every season. Not only does the Holy Spirit give us enough hope, but He pours it out so liberally that it overflows from our hearts into the lives of those around us.

Our hope becomes contagious and brings life to others as the attitudes of belief and expectation combine to cast off the parasites of doubt and unbelief that threaten to strangle the life of those they cling to.

Biblical, Holy Spirit given hope will never disappoint us:

‘This hope will not lead to disappointment’ – Romans 5:5a

Although the outcomes of any situation may not be what we had always planned, God promises to fill us with a hope that is not anchored in what happens to us, but what is happening inside of us.

You may have been told to never let go of hope. But if the other end of a rope is not connected to something stronger, then there is no real hope at all. Instead of wishful thinking, put your trust in the Holy Spirit who will give you hope that will never fail!
