Lucky In Love

For some love can seem like a gamble. You put yourself out there just hoping that person will reciprocate and that they feel the same way you do.

I remember one night in my early twenties reaching out to give a good bye hug to a girl I was especially fond of only to be met with the cold shoulder. I was absolutely gutted and ashamed.

In 1987 Kylie Minogue released the hit song ‘I Should Be So Lucky’, a song expressing that only in her dreams she would be so lucky for the one she loved to feel the same way she did. Whether it’s the romantic kind of love or just a desire for authentic friendship, there are also times that the hope we hold out for love can feel like it comes down to how lucky we are too.

But the good news is that there is one source of love that os far more reliable than luck. The Holy Spirit is a river that will never run dry and is a continuous stream of relentless, refreshing love and acceptance:

‘[Our] hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us’ – Romans 5:5 (NIV)

The love that is poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit will never leave us feeling rejected or ashamed.

Any move we make towards God is instantaneously met with the love of the Holy Spirit. There is no luck involved. This is not hit and miss. Any step of faith towards Him is only met with the promise that as we draw near to God, He will instantly draw near to us.

I realise looking back that I was rejected that night because our love was based on the waves of emotion that come in and out as quickly and as often as the tide changes.

But the love I enjoy with my wife today is built on the strength and the safety of the promise we made to love each other to the end – and it’s in this context that our love not only survives but continues to thrive.

In a similar way, God’s love for us is not based on luck or on how well we have behaved. Instead, this love is based on the promise that God will pour out His love to any who would draw near to Him!
