The Secret of the Master

Jesus knew they would be ruthless.

The Roman authorities would do whatever it took to stamp out anything that might threaten to disturb the status quo.

Jesus had already been brutally tortured and crucified, a tactic the rulers hoped would quickly halt the momentum that had been building over the previous three years. However against all expectation, and to the horror of both the Jewish and Roman authorities, Jesus’ tomb was found empty and murmurings of a resurrection began to spread.

Jesus began to appear to his disciples to prepare them to continue the work He had started. Jesus knew they would face unrelenting opposition and be sent out like “sheep among wolves”. It would not be easy, and might have seemed like an impossible task to these young and eager disciples.

But Jesus had a secret weapon. He knew that education, knowledge or eloquent speech would not be enough. Nothing they had would be able to defeat the spiritual powers of darkness seeking to destroy them.

What they needed was a spiritual weapon that would give them the power to overcome every force of darkness. Although He had previously spoken about the Holy Spirit, the disciples now leaned in to learn the secret of their master:

“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.” – Acts 1:4-5 (NIV)

Jesus would soon be returning to the Father, but instead of leaving them alone He promised them the Holy Spirit that would lead and guide, comfort and counsel them. But it would be worth the wait, as the Holy Spirit would also give them the power they needed to overcome even the greatest opposition:

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you” – Acts 1:8 (NLT)

No matter how impossible the task ahead of you may seem and no matter the opposition, don’t put your confidence in your own ability, but rest in God’s promise of the Holy Spirit to give you the power you need to finish the work He has given you!
