The road was wet, my tyres were bald, and as I accelerated with more than a little enthusiasm I completely lost control!
As the rear wheels spun around desperately searching for some traction the back of the car slid out across the other side of the road. Although I managed to get control of the car again and no damage was done, it took a few minutes to coerce my heart out of my mouth and for my heart beat to return to normal!
In the right context losing control can be fun, but most of the time losing control can have serious consequences.
Keeping control of a car is one thing, but when it comes to controlling ourselves it can be even more of a challenge. The bible describes someone who lacks self control as being one whose walls have been broken down:
‘Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control’ – Proverbs 25:28 (NIV)
In biblical times these walls were absolutely crucial to the safety, security and prosperity of a city. These walls offered protection from enemies, the security people needed to raise families, and the opportunity for its people to prosper.
But a city with broken walls is open for attack. It remains vulnerable and provides no real security, leaving its people in a constant state of uncertainty and unable to plan for the future.
The is a powerful picture of what happens to us if we lack self control in any area of our own life. No matter how great the potential or how powerful the ‘engine’, within is, without the critical element of self control our lives can spin out of control and end up on the other side of the road or heading in the opposite direction to where we want to.
The good news however, is that the Holy Spirit can give us the capacity to take control of the wheel and rebuild our walls:
‘For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control’ – 2 Timothy 1:7 (NET)
Instead of spinning out of control, rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to help you take the wheel and direct your life along the path of adventure God has given you!
