Most of the best things in life require a corresponding amount of suffering before they can be enjoyed.
Before going for a surf you firstly have to get to the surfing spot itself, requiring anything from a short drive in the car to a trek through winding bush tracks, a frantic scurry over hot sand dunes or a precarious navigation along jagged limestone headlands before even entering the water. It’s only after diving under relentless barraging walls of whitewash that you finally make it out the back to wait for the perfect wave.
But in end the suffering is nothing compared to the moment you finally launch into the first glassy barrel of the day. The joy on the inside gave the grit to endure the suffering because you knew it would be worth it in the end!
The bible clearly states that there will be suffering in this life, but that it is nothing compared to the joy we will experience when we go to be with Jesus:
‘What we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later’ – Romans 8:18 (NLT)
In his letter to the church in Thessalonica Paul noted the suffering the believers had endured, but recognised it was joy from the Holy Spirit that gave them to grace and grit to stand firm:
‘You received the message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering it brought you’ – 1 Thessalonians 1:6 (NLT)
Despite the suffering that came as a result of being identified as a follower of Jesus, these these believers remained steadfast in their faith. The Holy Spirit didn’t nullify their suffering but gave them the grace and grit to get through despite it.
After two days of gruelling vertical trekking Jess and I finally made it to the top of the 3200m high mountain. The morning mist dissolved to reveal a majestic outlook that took our breath away and we agreed that “the view from here” has made it all worth it.
No matter what you are going through, the Holy Spirit will give you the grace and grit you need to endure even the greatest suffering. In the end, the ‘view from here’ will make it all worth it!
