In my late teens and early 20’s I became a pro at push starting cars.
Whenever I left the lights of my Datsun Sunny on overnight, all I would need to do is put the car into neutral, push it down the road until it gained enough speed, jump in and shift the stick into first gear for the engine to burst into life.
But then one day I bought a car with automatic transmission it became a completely different story.
All of a sudden I could no longer get the car started on my own. I needed some help. And asking for help when it exposes a weakness (or my basic lack of memory space!) is especially embarrassing.
None of us like to appear weak and like we haven’t got it all together. There are all kinds of industries that exist to cover up our flaws and hide our weaknesses. We like to avoid anything that might threaten the card board cut outs of ourselves that we present to the world around us.
But the truth is that it’s in weakness that we can often discover a new kind of strength we never knew we had.
There are some instances when God will allow certain weaknesses to remain in our lives. Paul discovered this when no matter how many times he attempted to pray his weakness away, God still allowed it to remain:
‘Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me’ – 2 Corinthians 12:8 (ESV)
But despite his plea, it remained in his life. But ironically it was also the very thing that led him to grow in his dependence on the Holy Spirit, and even became one of the keys to his power and success in ministry:
‘But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (12:9)
As Paul became weak, God’s grace was released and the power of the Holy Spirit gave Paul the ability to walk in the supernatural power of God in a way he had never experienced before.
Instead of running from your weakness, run to the arms of Jesus who will not only embrace you with arms of compassion, but fill you with the power of the Holy Spirit to conquer in life despite it!
