Who knew that your weaknesses could actually be the very key to your success and satisfaction in life?
We would all prefer to allow the things we’re especially good at to be the what other people see on the surface while our weaknesses and shortcomings remain hidden away out of sight.
While this is normal, there are times that we take this too far and either refuse to accept our obvious flaws because of pride and push people further away to reduce the risk of exposure, or spend our entire lives judging, assessing and comparing the weaknesses of others to justify or minimise our own.
But pushing people away or reducing every relationship down to a competition is no recipe for a successful and satisfying life, because as Anthony Robbins says, “The quality of your life is in the quality of your relationships”.
Instead pulling us apart, God allows our weaknesses to remain in order to draw us together. Or weaknesses draw us into relationship because we have a need to draw on each other’s strengths:
‘Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other. In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well’ – Romans 12:4-6 (NLT)
Our weakness prevents isolation and draws us into family as we each contribute our own strengths to cover one another’s weaknesses. This is one of the key ways the ‘Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness’ (Romans 8:26), as He gives special abilities we each contribute so we can grow in love:
‘He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love’ – Ephesians 4:16 (NLT)
The most valuable gift we have in life is not so much what we do, but who we do it with. The Holy Spirit cares far too much to allow us to remain isolated, and invites us to bring all of who we are today, so that together we can shine brighter tomorrow!
