I never wanted to be a pastor.
When I was 17 someone mentioned that I might like to be a pastor one day, but I couldn’t think of anything worse! Although I respected the pastors at my church, nothing about their job inspired the sense of adventure I was seeking at the time.
But something I couldn’t deny is that my heart began to stir as a sense of call began to rise up within me.
During those years however, it seemed impossible and far beyond my reach. Considering the level of brokenness I had to overcome, the idea seemed like nothing but a pipe dream.
The thing about faith is that it always prompts you to do something far beyond your own ability and capacity. And this is the exact reason we’ve been given the Holy Spirit; to give us the power to do the things that faith has called us to do:
‘May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do’ – 2 Thessalonians 1:11 (NLT)
The word ‘faith’ in this verse means ‘God’s divine persuasion (as distinct from human belief and confidence), where the Lord births faith in the yielded believer’ (HWS).
God’s promise to us is that He will supply all the power we need through the Holy Spirit to accomplish all the dreams He has placed in our heart. In other words, what God has started, He will finish!
Although a step of faith can be taken in a moment of time, most of the good things our faith prompts us to do involves more of a journey or an unfolding story. It’s often during the in-between times that we need the Holy Spirit to give us the ability to persevere through setbacks and overcome all kinds of opposition. Anyone can start the adventure, but fewer will last the distance.
As for me, the power of God is what has given me the ability to overcome setbacks and brokenness to end up where I am today. My encouragement to you is that if your faith prompts you, then step out! Don’t hold back! The Holy Spirit will give you the power to accomplish all the good things He has called you to do!
As you do, ‘the name Jesus will be honored because of the way you live’ (1:12a)
