It was the first day of the rest of my life, and things would never be the same again.
Inspired by my house mate and his shiny new healthy eating book, I decided that from here on in I was going all green and healthy. I would follow the footsteps of Daniel and become a lion tamer!
With the indignation of a newly recruited clean eating activist, I flung the fridge door open to rid the shelves of all it’s poison. Next stop was the local market where I filled my arms with as many green, red and yellow vegetables as my budget would allow.
I didn’t want to wait any longer. A 1000km journey starts with the first step, and for me that first step translated into my first bowl full of chopped up forest.
Resisting the urge to reach for the ranch sauce, I plunged my fork into the green abyss and pulled out a leafy bouquet resembling a small garden rather than the colourful arrangement on the cover of the book. I chewed at the green and eventually swallowed everything in front of me until I finally conquered the bowl! I had taken the first step towards a fat free, pimple free existence!
But my new life only lasted for one day before I went back to my old life of Zinger burgers and Mi goreng noodles!
There is a limit to the success that our own motivation can give us. But when the Holy Spirit births a dream in our heart we are compelled with an energy that overcomes even the most impossible obstacles.
Compelled by the Holy Spirit, Paul had such determination that not even the threat of death could stop him:
“And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem… the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it to finish the race assigned me by the Lord Jesus” – Acts 20:22-24 (NIV/ NLT)
Paul was never compelled by guilt or the expectations of others. In the same way, if you want to finish your race, then allow the Holy Spirit to birth in you a dream that will never fade, so that no matter the cost, you will see it through until the very end!
