Under the Influence

I was obsessed. I even dreamed about having one.

My mate from East Manjimup Primary School had a silver chain necklace, and I wanted one too. He wore it as well as any kid in grade two could, and his influence reached beyond the school yard into our family home.

It was impossible to convince my parents to get me one, so I raided Mum’s supply cupboard to find an adequate substitute. To my delight I discovered wool yarn with silver tinsel woven into the thread, so I cut it to size and tied it around my neck. My friends Influence was complete!

Whether or not we like it or realise it, we are all under the influence of someone or something, all of the time. The thing that makes the greatest difference in what direction you take in life is who or what you allow to influence you.

We can either choose to live passively and allow the ever changing ebbs and flows of popular culture to influence us, or we can live intentionally by choosing what people and things will have the greatest influence.

Paul encouraged the church in Ephesus to live with great intent. He wanted to rip them out of a passive mindset and to avoid being swept up in the cultish, sexual worship of the goddess Diana and avoid the pitfalls of being influenced by the dominant godless culture of the day:

‘Be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do’ – Ephesians 5:15-17 (NLT)

Paul expands the point and uses the antithesis to suggest who they should choose to influence them:

‘Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit’ (5:18)

When a person is under the influence of the Holy Spirit, even the greatest fools among us are made wise as we are led in how to make the most of the opportunities life presents us.

Choose the the Holy Spirit to be your greatest influence. As you do, you will become wise and live a life that makes the most of every moment!
