A Gift That Keeps Loving

My highest priority in life is my relationship with Jess, but sometimes I need help so I can love her even better.

The other day was our anniversary, so I set out to find a flower shop that was still open after hours. I finally managed to discover the iconic Bridge Road Florist who have been open 24 hours, 7 days a week since the eighties. Help had been ready and waiting!

I parked across the road at Office Works and after shuffling the kids safely over Bridge road we began the hunt for the perfect flowers. After successfully navigating the acrobatic task of keeping curious fingers from touching every splash of colour within reach, we piled back into the car and headed home with the top secret package. I managed to sneak the arrangement into Leianna’s wardrobe for the night so I could surprise Jess with a candle lit bouquet early the next morning.

Jess was really touched and thankful for the effort I went to. But I couldn’t have done it without the help of Bridge Road Florist. It was the flowers from the florist that helped me to love Jess better, leaving her feeling built up and encouraged by my love.

In the same way, every spiritual gift that the Holy Spirit gives us is intended to help us love each other even better than we already do. This is why God encourages us (and even commands us) to seek not only love, but to eagerly seek the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit:

‘Let love be your highest goal! But you should also eagerly desire the special abilities the Spirit gives – especially the ability to prophesy’ – 1 Corinthians 14:1 (NLT/ NIV)

The words ‘eagerly desire’ mean to ‘boil over and burn with zeal; to set ones heart on, to covet, be jealous, and have complete intent’ (Stongs/ WHS). In other words, to the same extent that we pursue love, we should zealously pursue the gifts that help us to love each other even better.

Never neglect love as your highest priority. But because of your love, eagerly desire and seek for the gifts of the Holy Spirit!
