You got the feeling it was going to get really wet.
By the look of things it seemed like I’d need to stop what I was doing and duck for cover. But instead of reacting, I pulled out my phone to check the rain radar app, which gave me a live, 512km wide birds eye view of how much rain was on its way, and how long the current shower would last.
The radar told me that this downpour would only last a few more moments before the clouds parted to allow the sun to shine through again. So instead of retreating, I kept on going on with what I was doing, and in a short time the promised blue once again dominated the skies.
It’s not easy to resist reacting to bad weather! And in a similar way, it’s not easy to resist reacting to what we see and hear around us when it comes to making some of the more significant choices in life.
The dominant culture climate can have a huge level of influence on the choices we make and direction we take. At times it can be hard to resist basing your own decisions on the convictions of others instead of our own. What we need is a birds eye view, or a ‘radar for life’ that can give us the kind of perspective that will help us make wise decisions.
The Holy Spirit is our ‘radar for life’ given to help us see things from God’s perspective. This is exactly how Jesus made His decisions. He never made choices based on the ever shifting ‘weather patterns’ or ‘climate’ of the opinions of people or culture, but instead was led by the Holy Spirit:
‘The Spirit of the Lord will rest on [Jesus] – the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding… He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears’ – Isaiah 11:2-3 (NIV)
The Holy Spirit lifts us to see from a great height:
‘He carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City’ – Revelation 21:10 (NIV)
Never make your decisions solely on what you see with your eyes or hear with your ears, but rely on your ‘radar for life’ as the Holy Spirit lifts you to see life from above!
