I’ve only being skiing once in my life, and I absolutely loved it!
In year 10 we made the epic journey across the Nullarbor with 45 other high schoolers trapped within the confines of an odour-filled coach bus for three days.
After completing our obligatory educational tour to Canberra and Sydney, it was time to let our hair down and step out onto the snow. After a quick lesson and a few practice runs on the smaller slopes, we amateurs tried our luck on the biggest slopes we could find.
This is where gravity did it’s best work. Over the course of the day we grew in confidence to handle the twists and curves of the terrain. But what we found out quicker than ever was that it was almost impossible to stop and fight the double effect of a slippery surface and the force of gravity relentlessly pulling us in a downward direction.
When we hit the bottom of the run and looked back up the mountain, we knew it would be almost impossible to make our way back up the steep slippery slope with the little remaining strength we had left. We needed something to help us defeat gravity and get us back up on top, so we followed the crowds of people heading towards the ski lift.
Just like fighting the forces of gravity on a ski slope, so do we also continuously fight the battle against the gravity of sin, temptation, the enemy and overwhelming situations in life. If we give it a rest even for a moment we can find ourselves sliding down a slippery slope even further away from where we want to be.
The good news is that God gives us the power to lift us out of even the deepest valley:
“I pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms” – Ephesians 1:19-20 (NLT)
No matter how slippery your slope or how relentless the force of gravity may be, as we trust in God, He will give us the power of the Holy Spirt to defeat gravity and put us back on top!
