The Cost of Pursuit

It was worth the risk of getting into some deep trouble.

Her parent’s were away at the time, so I got on my bike to make the two hour round trip out of town just to see her. Thankfully, I wasn’t caught which made all the effort worth it in the end. I valued the time spent with her much more than what it potentially cost me to pursue it!

There is always a price to pay in the pursuit of the things we value the most. Whether it’s saving up for a house deposit, equipping ourselves for the future by studying an area of passion, or pursuing that dream girl (like a mate of mine who racked up a $2500 bill calling his girlfriend while overseas!), the birth of a dream is never delivered without a great cost.

Jesus knew that His time on earth was limited. He needed to find exactly the right people He could train and equip to continue the work He was doing after He left. This was no small decision, as the future salvation of billions would rest on the choices He made.

Jesus needed to hear the voice of God no matter what it cost Him, so He left the comfort of his bed and went out into the cold night to climb a mountain and seek the voice of the Holy Spirit:

‘Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night. At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles’ – Luke 6:12-13 (NLT)

The next morning, Jesus chose the twelve that would begin a movement that has never stopped expanding 2000 years on from that night! No wonder Jesus thought it was worth the effort!

Hearing the voice of God always takes effort. It takes intentionality and energy, sacrifice and a commitment to push through the barriers that want to keep us locked into the status quo.

But those who truly want to see their God-given desires turned from dreams into reality will always value the voice of the Holy Spirit more than what it cost to pursue it.

Never let the cost of pursuit prevent you from hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit and seeing your dreams turned into reality!
