Renovation

Fewer and fewer people these days have the heart to restore the broken things.

In today’s market any piece of land purchased with a dilapidated house still on it get’s knocked down so a completely new building can be built to make the most of the limited space and to maximise profits.

But when it comes to the brokenness of humanity, instead of wiping us away like some smudge on the table, the kindness of God always seeks to restore us so we once again reflect His own beauty and dignity.

The moment we put our trust in Jesus we are ‘born’ into His family and belong to a God who loves us and calls us His own:

‘When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit’ – Titus 3:4-5 (NIV/ NLT)

But although we belong to Him, certain parts of our lives may still look like a run down house in serious need of some renovation, and we wonder how we could ever change these ugly habits and desires.

The good news is that Jesus now has the title deed to our lives. We belong to Him, so He begins the process of renewal through the power of the Holy Spirit. This ‘new life’ literally means that He effects a ‘renovation [or] complete change for the better’ (Strongs), and makes us ‘fresh [and] new’ (HWS).

The kindness of God gives a fresh, new life on the inside by the power of the Holy Spirit. But this work is not dependent on our own ability to fix our selves up. In fact the more we are involved, the more we can get in the way.

What determines the quality and speed of this renovation is our level of surrender, and to what level we will allow the Holy Spirit to break down or demolish certain walls and features we find particularly hard to let go.

No matter what your life looks like now, you can be confident that the Holy Spirit has the power to take even the most broken down home and make it new again!
