Careless Trust

Nine months after the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, I landed in Sri Lanka to contribute in some small way to the lives of those impacted by the devastation.

Transport options were limited, so I often found myself standing at the back of a small truck or ute that weaved it’s way through the chaotic traffic filling the eroded coastal highway.

Despite my vice like grip on the edge of the cabin, I knew there was nothing that would prevent me from being catapulted into the air if our driver spent half a second too long on his favourite side of the road, so instead of spending my time worrying I decided to enjoy the roller coaster ride. I began to relax – almost to the point of being careless – and trusted that despite multiple near death experiences our driver would eventually get us there safely.

This ‘carefree’ trust I showed our driver is a picture of the trust that God invites us to give Him. Although there are some things we can control, there are even more things in life we cannot. Instead of spending our time worrying or anticipating what we would do if the worst was to happen, we are invited to trust in Him:

‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight’ – Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)

This word, ‘trust’ literally means to be ‘bold, confident, secure’ and even ‘careless’ (Strongs). As we trust in the mystery of God’s sovereignty – even to the point of being careless – we can be assured that He will bring us safely to the destination He has planned for us long ago!
