If you want to travel overseas, you’ve got to be willing to leave everything behind.
You’ve got to be ready to leave your bed behind (I’d like to see you try and take it with you!), your surround sound system and flat screen TV. You need to be willing to let go of everything in order to discover the adventure of a place you’ve never been before.
Levi would have been completely shocked when Jesus invited him to follow him. He was one of the despised tax collectors who worked on behalf of the oppressive Roman government, but something about Jesus compelled him to listen:
‘After this, [Jesus] went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” So Levi got up, left everything, and followed him’ – Luke 5:27-28 (ESV)
In that life changing moment, Levi encountered the undeserving love and grace of God. At that moment he knew that no amount of riches could ever make him feel as ‘at home’ as he did with Jesus so he decided to leave everything and follow Him.
This is the same invitation Jesus gives us today. He invites us to “leave everything” and follow Him. He invites us to travel light and to be willing to leave everything we’ve ever known to follow the One who intimately knows us.
Leaving everything will look different from one person to the next. Leaving everything for one may be a willingness to miss out on a promotion as their confession of faith disqualifies them in the eyes of their employer. For another it may mean leaving a certain group of friends or a lifestyle that doesn’t honour God.
For some it may literally mean to leave everything to be a missionary or sell assets and investments to give towards the work of God and those in need. Sometimes it may even mean leaving good things that distract us from God’s best.
Regardless of what your ‘everything’ may be in this season, as you leave your comfort zones and travel light, you will have begun an adventure that will take you to places you have never been before!
