Bring Your Energy

Most of the guys on my team were better than me.

I started playing soccer half way through grade five, but they had been playing together since grade one. I was a late starter!

But although most of them had more natural talent than me, I had more energy to burn, and in the end my ability to run at full pace for the entire game made up for the talent gap. Every Saturday morning I gave my all and held nothing back, and in my peak season I had the goals to show for it.

Whether it’s sport, your job, your relationships or your dreams, the most important thing for you to bring is your energy. Any coach or employer would prefer someone who has a little less talent but brings an energy that overcomes the odds and inspires than someone with a huge amount of talent who only brings a portion of their energy.

Jesus observed a woman who had less ‘talent’ than all the others who came before her:

‘While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box. Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins’ – Luke 21:1-2 (NLT)

When compared to the others, this woman looked a stingy scrooge. But Jesus knew that although the others had more ‘talent’ than she did, that she left nothing behind:

“I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has” (21:3-4)

Its not the amount compared to others that matters, but the proportion of what we have that counts. This woman was commended by Jesus because she gave ‘everything she has’. She ‘brought her energy’ and kept nothing in reserve for herself.

When it comes to the way we serve God and others, although our talent has value, the greatest gift we can bring is our energy. The ironic thing is that instead of running dry we are refreshed and energised:

‘The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed’ – Proverbs 11:35 (NLT)

Bring your energy. It’s your greatest act of worship and secret to success!
