I’ve never really enjoyed watching horror movies.
Although many people enjoy them, I’d rather watch an inspiring true story or an action movie (or even better, a true story action movie!). They are just not that good for my soul.
But there is one horror movie that I do watch, and no matter how many times I hit the eject button it just keeps on mysteriously playing.
This horror movie is called, ‘My Fears of the Future’. It’s the movie that plays over and over in my mind. All of my worst fears of failure, rejection, pain and insignificance are screened with all the emotion to go with it. No wonder sometimes making a decision seems impossible, especially when it’s one that will have a lasting effect on my future!
David also had his own horror movie playing in his mind (and this was even before TV was invented!). He was relentlessly chased down by king Saul who wanted to kill him:
‘I have heard the many rumours about me, and I am surrounded by terror. My enemies conspire against me, plotting to take my life’ – Psalm 31:13-15 (NLT)
David’s Future was under threat. But he had two choices. He could either become crippled by uncertainty or take proactive steps to drown out the noise and step into the destiny his fears sought to rob him from. This time, David made the choice to drown out the sounds of horror by turning his eyes to the promises of God:
‘But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying, “You are my God! My future is in your hands” (31:14-15a)
As David shifted his focus from the horror movie to the promises of God, the sounds of fear began to be drowned out by the promise of tomorrow. Although David had an army of men ready to fight to the death on his behalf, his greatest battle was in his mind. Before he could conquer an army, he needed to conquer his own mind.
The greatest hindrance to stepping into destiny are often our own fears. Although devil has no power over those who belong to Jesus, he can have an equally crippling effect by uploading fear into our imaginations.
Resist fear and step into destiny as you trust in the one who has your ‘future in his hands’!
