Worse Before the Promise

When the losing side knows they are close to defeat, they will have one last attempt at getting back into the game by throwing caution to the wind and giving everything they’ve got.

For a moment, it may seem like they are getting back on top, and at this point the winning side might begin to panic. But if the winning side can endure this final all or nothing attempt at victory, soon enough they will see that the opposition has nothing left in the tank and they will gain the victory they deserve.

When it comes to the fulfilment of a God given promise or a battle to overcome spiritual opposition, the same principle can apply.

God promised that the Israelites would one day return to their own land. As the time drew closer, the people grew stronger:

‘As the time drew near when God would fulfill his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt greatly increased’ – Acts 7:17 (NLT)

But instead of things becoming easier, things became harder and the Israelites found themselves under the oppression of a dictator who forced them into slavery:

‘But then a new king came to the throne of Egypt who… exploited our people and oppressed them, forcing parents to abandon their newborn babies so they would die’ (7:18-19)

As the Israelites increased, the opposition increased. Even as the promise drew closer to being fulfilled, in the eyes of the people it looked further away from than ever before.

But just at the right time, God stepped in to bring about a miraculous victory and deliverance:

“I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groans and have come down to rescue them” (7:34a)

After enduring the final assault the Israelites broke free and walked into the promised land!

Sometimes the fulfilment of a promise can seem even further away than it did when you first began. But instead of being discouraged by a sudden or unexpected increase of opposition or retaliation, be encouraged by the truth that God is faithful to see you through the final all or nothing assault before you claim the victory that has been yours all along!
