Last year I dreamed of taking our kids out of the city to go camping in the country. I imagined the great times we’d have together sitting around the campfire, climbing mountains and exploring the great unknown.
But then nothing happened.
Time flies when your having fun, and I began to realise that rather than waiting for the perfect opportunity I had to make the most of what we had in front of us and just make the decision to go. I finally packed the car, bought a cheap tent and drove out of the city to spend a night under the stars. It ended up being the only time we went camping that whole year!
A lesson to learn from this experience is that although it’s good to dream about the future and imagine the possibilities, there comes a time when we need convert our dreams into practical steps of action. We need to graduate from being dreamers to doers.
In the same way, God not only looks for those who share the dreams that He dreams, but those who will take the action required to bring those dreams to life. When God was looking for the next king of Israel, he needed someone who would not only do the talking, but would also do the walking:
‘[God] raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’ – Acts 13:22b (ESV)
David was a man after God’s own heart. But this alone would never be enough. God needed someone who would be willing to count the cost and do whatever it took to ‘do all’ of God’s will.
David was not a perfect man. But what God was sure of is that this man was both a dreamer and a doer. David could be trusted to see the dreams of God’s own heart come to life!
Just like David did, make the decision to be both a dreamer and a doer. As you do, it will result in the kind of action that executes the will of God and releases the kingdom of heaven to invade earth!
It’s not the dreaming that counts, but the doing that will release the blessing of heaven over your life!
“Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them” – John 13:17 (NLT)
