Ready For Anything

Getting ready is an essential ingredient to making the most of every day and living a successful and fulfilling life.

We get ready for the day by getting dressed. We get ready for the week by scheduling our calendars. We get ready for the future by getting an education. To the extent that we take the time to get ready is the extent that we make the most of our time.

No wonder God repeats the command to be ready:

‘Be ready in season and out of season’ – 2 Timothy 4:2a

This word, ‘ready’ literally means, ‘to be on standby’ (Strongs). Just as a sports player keeps their fitness levels up for the moment they’re picked for the team, so we too are encouraged to be on ‘standby’ for the moment God calls us to action.

The moment Hezekiah became king, he began to lead the nation back to God. He called the priests out of their homes and into the temple to lead the people in worship:

“My sons, do not neglect your duties any longer! The Lord has chosen you to stand in his presence, to minister to him, and to lead the people in worship“ – 2 Chronicles 29:11a

Although a few priests had kept their ‘fitness levels’ up, most had neglected practices of purification and were not ready when their moment arrived:

‘But there were too few priests… so their relatives the Levites helped them… until more priests had been purified, for the Levites had been more conscientious about purifying themselves than the priests had been’ (29:34)

Tragically, because they neglected to be ready, many priests missed their opportunity and others took their places instead.

Just like these priests, God has chosen each of us to lead this generation back to Him. But in order to get ready and remain on ‘standby’ we need to keep our lives free from anything that would diminish our ‘fitness levels’:

‘If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honourable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for [anything] ’ – 2 Timothy 2:21

As you take care of the hidden things, you will ready for anything, and fulfil your chosen destiny to lead this generation to worship Him once again!
