Purpose Fulfilment

Have you ever felt like something, or someone was attempting to cut you off or prevent you from moving forward or stepping into your purpose in life? In surfing terms, this is called a ‘drop in’.

A ‘drop in’ is when another surfer drops into your wave and cuts you off, taking up your space and churning up the water, causing you to lose control and get smashed by the wave. It’s unwelcome and takes the fun out of life.

David knew that God had called him to do great things and that he had been born to fulfil a unique purpose. But as he began to ride the wave of fulfilment, he was cut off in mid-flight and experienced a drop in for the ages.

After defeating Goliath David rose from total obscurity to become the most famous man in all of Israel. But most profoundly, the prophet Samuel anointed David to become the next king after Saul. But as David’s fame began to grow, Saul grew envious and decided to destroy David by cutting him off at his knees and prevent him from becoming the next king Israel.

Saul and his special forces began to hunt David down and pursued him throughout the land. Eventually, David found himself hemmed in and trapped. He was hiding in a cave and Saul had him within his grasp. In his anxiety and desperation, David cried out to the only one who could help him:

‘In you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me’ – Psalm 57:1-2 (ESV)

There was no logical way out of this impossible situation, so instead of working it all out in his head, he chose to entrust his future into God’s hands instead.

Despite being faced with the evidence that his purpose was under threat, he declared the truth that it was God, and not him that was responsible to see that purpose fulfilled. The One who called him was the one who would sustain him.

No matter what storms you are facing, and no matter how high the evidence is stacked up against you, as you entrust your soul into God’s hands, He will see you through and empower you fulfil the very purpose you were born for!
