The Big Picture

want to know it all now.

I want to know the detail of what the future looks like and what my part to play in it will be. I want to know how my kids will go and what difference life my life would have made in the world when I look back at the end of it.

Jesus’ followers also wanted to know it all now. They wanted to know how it would all turn out, and what their part in it would be:

‘When the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” – Acts 1:6

But instead of giving them all the details, He gave them a vision that caused them to lift their eyes off the dreamy distant future to focus instead on what was right in front of them:

‘He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” – Acts 1:6-8

Jesus pulled the disciples from the clouds to the ground. Instead of dreaming of what may or may not happen in the future, He refocused then on what they were responsible for in the present. And as they focussed in on the present, they achieved far more than they ever thought possible as the Holy Spirit empowered them to do it.

Sometimes we can find ourselves floating in the clouds of the dreamy distant future for a little too long. Our feet has left the ground and suddenly we’re living in a self made virtual reality that has no lasting impact in the present. No matter how compelling the dream may be, if our feet haven’t begun to move in the real world, we may find ourselves looking back having travelled a much shorter distance than we’d hoped for.

A key to seeing your dreams come true is to leave the detail in God’s hands. As you begin to move with what’s right in front of you, the Holy Spirit will empower you to do more than you could ever imagine. Your times and season are in the Fathers hands. Get your feet on the ground and begin to move!
