Just like the small adjustments we make with the steering wheel determine the direction we drive so the words we speak determine our direction in life.
Our words have the power to create or destroy, to build up or tear down, and to give life or take it:
‘The tongue has the power of life and death’ – Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)
Even in the midst of great opposition and the storms of life that overwhelm us, the words we speak have the power to cut through the waters and keep us heading in the right direction:
‘[The tongue is like] a small rudder [that] makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong’ – James 3:4 (NLT)
King Hezekiah realised the power contained in his words, so he used them to his own advantage. A great and powerful army threatened to destroy Jerusalem. But then in the face of certain defeat, Hezekiah gathered his commanders together in the city square to give them a speech:
“Be strong and courageous! Don’t be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria or his mighty army, for there is a power far greater on our side! He may have a great army, but they are merely men. We have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles for us!” – 2 Chronicles 32:7-8a (NLT)
As the commanders looked over the walls they could see the great army that encamped against them, and all they could see with their eyes was death and defeat. However as Hezekiah began to speak, something within them began to stir. They began to see things not from a human perspective, but a heavenly perspective.
The power of Hezekiah’s words created a new found confidence within them that was not based on what they saw, but based on the power of God:
‘[So] the people took confidence from the words of Hezekiah king of Judah’ (32:8b)
Just as Hezekiah did, use your speech to your own advantage. Use your words to speak life and to build a new found confidence within yourself and in those listening that will direct you through the greatest storms and deliver you from the greatest opposition!
