The other day I was sitting on the couch at home intensely tapping away at my phone while Oscar, my six year old son was rocking back and forth on a chair next to me.
The repetitive motion started to agitate me, so I said, “Oscar, what are you doing?”. At that moment he lifted his head and innocently said, “Dad, I just want to be with you”. It broke my heart – because here was I agitated at my son who simply wanted to be with his Dad!
It reminded me of Moses who also simply wanted to be in the presence of his Father. Although God had promised him a fertile and spacious land, he said, “I don’t care how good the land is, I don’t want to go on without your presence. It’s your presence that is the only thing that distinguishes us from all the people of the earth. There’s nothing special about us – but there’s something special about the presence of God”.
You see it’s the presence of God that brings true freedom and gives us fulness of joy. It’s the presence of God that breaks the chains and provides the atmosphere where miracles begin to happen! As for me, I’m hungry for the presence of God. It’s not where I am, what I’m wearing, what I’m doing that matters as much as Who I’m with.
But what is even more profound than our hunger for God is how much He wants to be with us! In fact He wants to be with us so much that He sent Jesus to remove every barrier of sin so we can come right into His presence:
‘We can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. [So]… let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean. Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise’ – Hebrews 10:19-20,22-23
This is not about the broken promises that we have made, but the one promise that He has made. Forget trying to prove yourself. Instead, hold tightly to the One who has proven you clean and able to enter right into the presence of God!
