Open the Envelopes

It’s a moment many of us have experienced.

After sorting through the piles of paper that have accumulated over the last few weeks, there is that sinking feeling that you may have thrown away the envelope that contained that cheque or cash inside.

You rush to the bin and begin frantically digging around until you pull out the crumpled envelope and open it. Relief washes over you when you discover that nothing has been lost! It’s a lesson I’ve learned over time, that every envelope needs to be opened, regardless of how tattered it looks.

It’s also this principle that allows us to experience the amazing things that God has prepared for us. Many of us miss the things God has for us because they are packaged in a crumbled envelope, and we miss the chance to take a look inside. We judge from the outward appearance, while God sees beyond what is seen with the eye.

1 Corinthians 2:7-12 speaks of a wisdom that comes from the Spirit of God. This kind of wisdom is opposite to the wisdom that comes from the world, which judges, assesses and makes decisions based from a human perspective.

Because the people saw things from a human perspective, they crucified the very gift that God had given them:

‘But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord’ (12:8)

But those who rely on the wisdom that the Holy Spirit gives will unlock the limitless plans and purposes that Hod has for those who love Him:

‘That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets… And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us’ (2:9-10; 12)

As we rely on the wisdom given to us through God’s Spirit, we will avoid throwing away the envelopes and discarding the limitless opportunities God has for those who love Him!
