With so much talk around the housing market and the economy, we can often forget that the most important investment we can make in this life is to play our part in building the only house that will last forever.
The house of God is the only one that won’t crack, age or go out of fashion. But Paul encourages us that just as building a new home takes a lot of care and attention, so too does it require the same if we are to build something of eternal value:
“According to the grace of God given to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it” (3:10). Paul encourages us to build ‘according to the grace’ God gives each one of us. Without comparison, Paul acknowledges that each person has been given the grace to make their own unique contribution.
“For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ’ (3:11). Only the work that is built on the foundation of Jesus Christ will last forever.
“Anyone who builds… may use a variety of materials – gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done [and whether] a person’s work has any value’ (3:12-13). A person with a lot of straw may look very impressive. But when faced with being put through the fire, it’s not the quantity, but the quality of the work that counts.
“If the work… survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames” (3:14-15). We have all been saved by grace through faith alone. We can never ‘add’ to our salvation. However the work we each do to contribute to the building of God’s house will be assessed and rewarded according to what God values, and not what the world values.
When you play your part in building God’s house, remember to a) Build on the right foundation of Jesus Christ, and b) Build with the kinds of quality materials that will last forever!
