Expansion

I distinctly remember the very first night we took our newborn baby home from the hospital. As my head rested on the pillow, a great sense of responsibility began to descend upon me, as I realised that it this was not someone else’s responsibility, but ours!

But the truth is that although we are the ones who are raising our kids, they ultimately belong to God:

‘The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him’ – Psalm 24:1

Jess and I have the responsibility to raise our kids before God as best we can, with the understanding that they ultimately belong to Him. We are ‘stewards’ of the gifts God has given us.

While speaking of his own God-given gift to share the gospel, Paul encourages us to be found faithful with whatever ‘gift’ God has given us:

‘It is required of stewards that they be found faithful’ – 1 Corinthians 4:2

This word, ‘steward’ literally speaks of a person who is put in charge as a manager. A manager is responsible (and accountable) for the running of the store. They take care of the financial income and expenditure, the stock, the culture of the workplace and much more. They don’t own the store, but they are expected to be faithful with what they have been entrusted with.

In His generosity God has given us an abundance of resource, gifting, skills, time (and much more) for us to steward. None of these things belong to us, but each of us have been entrusted to faithfully manage what we’ve been given. And the extent to which we are faithful today is the extent that we will be entrusted with even more tomorrow:

“The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!” – Matthew 25:21 (NLT)

Your measure of faithfulness in this season will determine the measure of expansion in the next. Never despise the small beginnings, but honour God by placing value on even the most insignificant responsibility. As you do, your life will continue to grow and expand more than you could imagine!
