The moment you step over the white line onto the field is the very moment that your body is no longer your own.
Your entire body is given to help your team win the game, with the position you play and the moves you make all directed by the coach. There is no such thing as partial involvement. Either your entire body is on the field, or you are one of a crowd of spectators.
In a similar way, we are also a part of ‘God’s team’ through our faith in Jesus:
‘The person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him’ (6:17)
Matthew Henry stated that, “If the soul be united to Christ by faith, the whole [person has] become a member of his spiritual body”. In other words, through our faith we become a part of His ‘team’. This not only includes our spirit, but also our bodies:
‘Don’t you realize that your bodies are actually parts of Christ?’ – 1 Corinthians 6:15 (NLT)
In a mysterious way, our bodies actually become one with Jesus. We become a part of His team. We’ve crossed the line and the ball is in play. Our ‘head coach’ becomes the one who directs our path and determines the ‘positions’ we play in. Our bodies no longer belong to us, but have become entirely His:
‘Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body’ (6:19-20)
Sometimes we can confuse what worship really means. We reduce worship down to a few songs on Sunday or listening to the latest worship album. But worship involves so much more than our ears and mouth. It involves all of who we are. And we worship with everything we have because He has already given everything to us:
‘In view of God’s mercy… offer your bodies as a living sacrifice. This is truly the way to worship him’ – Romans 12:1 (NLT)
Jesus made the first move. He has already given His entire body on the cross to forgive us and give us eternal life. Make the decision to step over the line and make your body available for His Spirit to fill and move in and through you. You will never be the same!
