Who knew I’d get so excited about grass?
When we moved in a few weeks ago the back yard was a sand pit full of overgrown weeds. But after a full day of backbreaking weeding, two boxes of grass seeds, 14 bags of soil and 9 days of watering, these luminous little green shoots began popping up all over the place!
But it didn’t all happen at once. In fact I had some serious doubts about whether or not a single blade would even break the surface, especially when after days of watering I couldn’t even see a single blade.
But instead of giving up, I decided to trust the instructions at the back of the box that told me it would take 7-10 days to see the grass begin to grow. So I kept on watering. And kept on weeding. And watered, and weeded and waited and waited.
Finally, not just one, but thousands of little green blades started bobbing up and stretching for the sun. I was so happy I reached down and stroked them with the loving affection of a first time father!
Building a life is a little like growing grass. After a long time of sowing and watering and weeding and waiting, you can get discouraged when there seems to be nothing to show for all your effort. But it’s just when you feel like giving up that you need to keep going:
‘You will always harvest what you plant… So let’s not get tired of doing what is good, for at just the right time we will reap a harvest if we don’t give up’ – Galatians 6:7a & 9 (NLT/NIV)
God’s word is just like the instructions on the back of the box of grass seeds. It tells me that although I don’t see anything happening on the surface, I can be assured that a harvest is being prepared below the surface. You will always harvest what you plant. So don’t only plant a few seeds, but sow abundantly:
‘Remember this: a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop’ – 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 (NLT)
Never give up, but keep it up. Keep on sowing and you will see a Harvest of abundance come in at ‘just the right time’!
