Give Generously

It’s a mystery.

When God wants to do something on earth, He looks for a human He can do it through.

When He wants to encourage someone, He looks for a person who is willing to speak kind words. When He wants to bring healing, He looks for someone who is willing to take a risk and pray for it:

‘The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are completely His’- 2 Chronicles 16:9

The eyes of the Lord are always searching. “Who is available? Who understands my compassion for humanity? Is there someone whose heart is so aligned with mine that it is almost indistinguishable from my own?”. When God finds someone who shares His generous, loving, kind and compassionate heart, He is able to move through that person to reach the world with His loving kindness!

When God also wants to help the poor and the needy, He looks for someone who chooses to be generous and who has a soft heart. Here is God speaking to His people, encouraging them to be His hands and feet:

“If there are any poor Israelites in your towns when you arrive in the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tightfisted toward them. Instead, be generous and lend them whatever they need.

Do not be mean-spirited and refuse someone a loan because the year for canceling debts is close at hand. If you refuse to make the loan and the needy person cries out to the Lord, you will be considered guilty of sin.

Give generously to the poor, not grudgingly, for the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do. There will always be some in the land who are poor. That is why I am commanding you to share freely with the poor”

(Deuteronomy 15:7-11 NLT)

“If there are any poor… do not be hard-hearted or tightfisted. Instead, be generous”! It’s easy for us to grow familiar or for our hearts to begin to harden to the overwhelming needs in the world and in our own backyards.

But let’s never forget the honour and privilege it is to be God’s own hands and feet as we choose to align our own hearts with the things that are dear to His!
