When Pointless Becomes Pointed

Have you ever looked at your situation and wondered how this could possibly be God’s plan for your life?

Whether you’ve been stuck in a place for much longer than you hoped for, or you’ve been forced to move on from a situation you wanted to remain in, sometimes it can all seem pretty pointless, and we can wonder where God is in all of this.

Heber and his wife, Jael ‘moved away from all the other members of their tribe… to the oak of Zaanannim near Kedesh’ (Judges 4:11). To some, this move may have seemed pointless. For Heber and Jael, it might have been a purely financially motivated move. But in the eyes of God it was a move that became a pivotal point in Israel’s history.

Israel had been invaded by an army from Caanan and lived under brutal oppression for 20 years. They cried out to God, so he sent the prophet Deborah to deliver Israel from Sisera, the commander of the invading army.

When the army was finally defeated, only Sisera was left alive and he fled from the battle field to find a hiding place, and happened to come across Heber & Jael‘s tent. Jael immediately recognised the opportunity in front of her and invited Sisera to come in:

‘Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Come into my tent, sir. Come in. Don’t be afraid.” So he went into her tent, and she covered him with a blanket’ (4:18)

When Sisera fell to sleep Jael began to understand the point behind their ‘pointless’ move away from their extended family. Courage began to rise up in her heart, and she wasn’t going to let the moment pass:

‘When Sisera fell asleep from exhaustion, Jael quietly crept up to him with a hammer and tent peg in her hand. Then she drove the tent peg through his temple and into the ground, and so he died’ (4:21)

The tent peg driven into Sisera’s skull represented the pivotal point in history that brought Israel into a time of 40 years of peace. What seemed like a ‘pointless move’ became the most pointed move of a generation.

Just like He was for Jael, never forget that God is working behind the scenes in your life. What might seem pointless today can turn out to be the most pointed part of your journey yet!
