Everything For the One Thing

Watch this movie at your own risk!

Free Solo is a movie that documents professional rock climber Alex Honnold and his attempt to conquer the first free solo climb (no ropes!) of the famous El Captian’s 900 metre vertical rock face at Yosemite National Park.

It is an absolute heart stopper, and I had to the pause the movie multiple times to catch a breath and pace around the room for a reprieve before hitting play again!

There were all the reasons why he shouldn’t do it. Like, he could die. No one else wanted him to go through with it. The potential cost was way too high. But for all the reasons why not, there still remained the one reason to climb: He wanted to be the first person ever to solo climb the highest vertical rock wall in the world.

If Alex listened to all of the reasonable and responsible advice, he would guarantee a life of security and safety like everyone else. But Alex didn’t want a life like everyone else’s. He gave up everything for the one thing that mattered the most (unfortunately for Alex it seems that climbing has more value to him than relationships).

In a similar way (without the no-ropes-climbing-part!), God also calls us to give up everything for the one thing that matters most. As he was travelling, Jesus called one man to come and follow Him. But he said, “Lord, let me first return home and bury my father” – Luke 9:59b

This man wanted to delay leaving everything behind until there was nothing left to leave behind. He wanted to wait till his Dad had passed away before he began to follow Jesus. But Jesus’ reply was sobering:

“Let the dead bury their own dead. Your duty is to go and proclaim about the Kingdom of God”

Just as it wasn’t possible for Alex to live a life of safety and security at the same time as being the first to solo climb El Capitan, so too it is not possible for us to follow Jesus while holding onto the very life He calls us to surrender to Him.

When we follow Jesus, there are no ropes. The only thing we need to hold onto is the Rock of Jesus who is all the security and safety we will ever need as we let go of everything to live for the one thing that matters most!
